National Institute of Water Sports, GOA

A design that has bagged 1st place in international architectural Design competition.

"Here the Architecture is in constant motion being pulled into the sea from one side yet tied to the shore on the other"

The National Institute of Water sports (NIWS) has been setup by the Ministry of Tourism, India as an ‘apex’ body for training, education, consultancy and research to usher in an era of leisure-water sporting segment in the country.

Commissioned to M:OFA Studios, New Delhi in 2010, through an International level competition organized by NIWS-GSIDC, Goa, the design brief stated the development of National Institute of Water Sports at Panjim, Goa as an Iconic building.

Being one of its kind of an Institute in Asia the project has been designed to strive a dynamic relationship between the sports player and the sea through its architectural language and spaces. It is the articulation of this temporary yet adventurous moment or a passage in time between the surfer setting foot into the sea to setting foot out of it, which forms the Architecture of the Building. The building itself is a take off point wherein its sole function is to be a transitional link between the man and the sea.

The building too is ever changing, rising and falling just like the waves of the sea that twist and knot every surfer into its folds. The Architecture here mentally transport man in the midst of the sea.

Team M:OFA delivered a design that resonated similar sentiments. It is the surfer’s need to conquer the sea, pitted against the crashing, throbbing waves ready to engulf the surfer in each of its ferocious movements. From this prolonged tension/tautness there arises a moment where the sportsman takes over the sea (or the sea carries the surfer) and rides the waves, thereby creating this peculiar balance between the knotted forces of the sea and the aplomb of the mankind.

"Our concept originated from the moment where, a surfer jumps into a beckoning, powerful and beautiful sea, it becomes a continuous and passionate spar between the two elemental forces. The building in this case is just a link between the land and the sea." ~ M:OFA Studios

Here the Architecture is in constant motion being pulled into the sea from one side yet tied to the shore on the other. The building too is ever changing, dynamic, rising and falling just like the waves of the sea that twist and knot every surfer into its folds.

"innovative concept, landmark value, creates an icon for the touristic value of Goa already inhabited by foreign tourists for the purpose of water sports"

The landscape en-captures the patterns in sea water, swirling whirlpools and undulations. The jetty, the deck areas for the jetties are formed as we stretch the surface of water getting transformed into the building form.

The overall composition of the built and unbuilt offers a variety of user experiences imitating the gamut of exciting emotions involved in water sports.
